Education and Training in Switzerland

Young Swiss citizens living abroad who come to Switzerland to attend a course of education have to overcome a number of hurdles. There are many minor and major problems to be solved, ranging from the search for a suitable training place and accommodation to ways of financing education. We have tried to answer the most frequently asked questions in the following pages.

Association promoting Education for Young Swiss Abroad (AJAS)

The association promoting Education for Young Swiss Abroad was set up in 1962 by the Foundation for Young Swiss Abroad, the Organisation of the Swiss Abroad (OSA) and pro juventute. The AJAS office was formerly in Zurich but has been in Berne since 1989 and is administratively integrated into the OSA. The AJAS office is staffed by two employees.

For more than fortyfive years, we have been collecting and updating documentation and information relating to education.  All of this information is available to you either during a personal consultation at AJAS in Bern or, on request, by post or as an e-mail attachment.

For more than 40 years, AJAS has been advising young Swiss living abroad who return to their country of origin to attend a course of education. Extensive documentation and information is constantly compiled and updated for this purpose. AJAS handles the dossiers of Swiss citizens living abroad to apply for grants from their home canton and may itself make additional payments to supplement the cantonal grants.

This non-profit association is mainly financed by subsidies of the Federal Office for Culture as well as by private donations.
