Military service

" Every man of Swiss citizenship is liable for military service. The law provides for a replacement civil service." These are the terms of Article 59 of the Federal Constitution. The principle of the general obligation to serve in the army also applies to the Swiss living abroad, but its meaning is not quite the same for them as it is for those living in Switzerland. The Federal Council bore in mind the particular situation of Swiss expatriates when drafting in the law on the army and military administration and dealt separately with their obligation to serve as well as the other military duties they are liable for.

The following provisions are valid for young Swiss men from the age of 19. Swiss women may apply for voluntary service in the army or the Red Cross. As a rule, they have the same rights and obligations as Swiss men.
